After some speculation over an advert at Engadget a few days ago, rumours were rife about the pending arrival of a $99 netbook. Well today, that speculation has become a realisation with an announcement from Radioshack.

Radioshack has become the first major US retailer to offer a netbook with built in 3G techonology. The aim of this package is to quench the thirst for mobile access to internet applications wherever you happen to be.

The netbook offered in this package is the Acer Aspire One, which boasts the following features;

  • Intel(R) Atom Processor(TM)
  • 160GB Hard Drive
  • 1GB RAM
  • Weighs around 2½ pounds
  • Measures 9.8″ x 6.7″ x 1.1″ (WxDxH)
  • Built in 3G
  • Built in Wi-Fi
  • Built in Webcam
  • Built in Microphone
  • Windows XP (R) Home Edition
  • Memory Card Reader

The only catch with getting the netbook for $99 is that you have to subscribe to a two-year AT&T DataConnect mobile broadband service agreement with plans starting at $60 a month.

Whilst this may seem like a lot of money, if you are often on the move and need broadband access, this may be worth considering.

Purchasing the netbook without the AT&T services pushes the price of this netbook up to $499.
