Ah, wouldn’t it be great if you could run an entire suite of programs from a flash drive or memory card… Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email, web browsing, instant messaging - all without installing tons of software on your netbook hard drive.
Well, it’s not just a dream anymore, it’s a reality. Portable Apps is a platform designed to run a suite of programs from a flash drive or memory card.
It’s a fully open source and free platform, and works on any portable storage device- e.g. USB flash drive, iPod, memory card, portable hard drive etc…
There are three different suites available for download;
The Suite Standard has the most comprehensive collection of programs including;
- Writer (word processor)
- Calc (spreadsheet)
- Impress (presentations)
- Base (database utility)
- Draw (drawing)
The list of programs doesn’t end there! Once you have installed the suite of your choice, there are plenty of other portable programs to choose from, which can be added later.
The beauty of Portable Apps is that all personal data remains on flash drive, along with the suite of programs.
This means that if you want to show a friend a document, you don’t have to take your netbook with you. You are able to take just the flash drive, plug it into another computer, and your suite of programs and documents will run completely from the flash drive.
